A is For Presents Night of a Thousand Vaginas: An Emergency Benefit For Texas Women
On Sunday, January 16, A is For held our first major fundraiser at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles. The evening mixed music and comedy with our pro-choice advocacy message to raise over $20,000 for the following Texas abortion funds: Whole Women’s Health Fund, Lilith Fund, Fund Texas Women, and TEA Fund.
We have our all-star line-up to thank for the evening’s rousing success. Martha Plimpton and Sarah Thyre introduced our hosts for the evening, comedians Laura Kightlinger and, from NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” Retta. The two handled the proceedings with hilarious aplomb. At one point, Retta even sang opera.
Lots of talented friends pitched in to make it an extraordinary night. Comedians Zach Galifianakis, Tiffany Haddish, Jen Kirkman, Steve Agee, and outspoken pro-choice stalwart Sarah Silverman delivered fantastic sets that kept the audience laughing. Andy Richter auctioned off an extremely rare “Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” hoodie, while Martha Plimpton got a bidding war going between actor Michael Sheen and “Raising Hope” showrunner Mike Mariano for a feathered hat from the late, great Phyllis Diller’s estate. Mariano won the hat, but Sheen kicked in $750 in matching funds.
The evening ended with a beautiful acoustic set from Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and Matt Sweeney, host of the web series “Guitar Moves.” VIP ticket holders were invited to an exclusive after party for drinks and burlesque courtesy of Penny Starr Jr. and friends.
We are especially grateful to our audience who withstood anti-choice protestors as they waited in line.
