Founded in 2012 in direct response to intense political and social backlash against women’s health rights, A is For grew out of a desperate need to remove the stigma and shame that surrounds abortion and contraception. Public slut shaming had become acceptable, the line between church and state all but disappeared, and the idea that women should receive reproductive health care as a basic health requirement was called “a war on religion.” So, a group of actors and activists got together and decided something needed to be done, that the ignominy of being a woman: of choosing whether or not to be a mother, needed to end.

Our response was to use the familiar “Scarlet Letter” as a symbol of unity and defiance and to raise not only awareness but much needed funds for specific clinics, on the-ground groups, legal advocates, providers and educational groups.

Now, in 2015, women’s rights grow more precarious by the minute. There are 75% fewer abortion clinics in the US today than there were 24 years ago and most of them have closed in the past decade. Some 87% of U.S. counties do not have an abortion provider and 35% of women aged 15–44 live in those counties. We are not progressing. We are regressing. At breakneck speed. Regardless of which political party has power, regardless of the fact that 1 in 3 American women have had an abortion and more than half of those women are already mothers, regardless of the fact that science supports abortion and contraception as healthy, life-saving options, the battle for this human right continues to be fought on a daily basis. We will not surrender in this fight.
